The Dawn of Enterprise Democracy at IT Decisions 2011

This year’s IT Decisions event to focus on the ‘Consumerisation of Enterprise IT’ and the technology integration challenges that it presents

IT Decisions 2011, 28th and 29th June 2011, QEII Conference Centre, London

Delegates at next month’s IT Decisions event will hear how the convergence of consumer and corporate IT environments - together with the proliferation of new devices, applications and information sources - has become an unstoppable tide, requiring fresh approaches and new thinking from CIOs in order to manage it and harness it for business benefit. IT Decisions is the only free-to-attend UK event for senior IT executives to present an integrated view of the most important trends and innovations in IT convergence.

Tim Jennings, Research Fellow & Chief Analyst – Enterprise IT at OVUM IT will open both days of the event with a scene-setting keynote entitled: The Consumerisation of Enterprise IT. “Enterprise IT and related technology choices are no longer the sole domain of CIOs. Gone are the days when the CIO could ‘dictate’ a unified technology strategy across the board. Today, Enterprise IT is becoming more democratic, with users both within and outside organisational boundaries introducing a plethora of different devices for accessing corporate information in their preferred application format. And the IT function simply cannot hold back this tide,” explains Jennings. “However, CIOs can educate and influence user choices and employ techniques such as virtualisation to enforce security and segregate corporate and consumer personas.” This high-level keynote will explain the many impacts of this important shift, including the integration of cloud-based services with legacy architectures, and discuss the strategic options available to CIOs to enable them to ride the tide instead of swimming against it.

Continuing the theme of pervasive consumerisation in a later keynote, Robert Whiteside, Head of Enterprise at Google UK will explore how true cloud computing should enable cost-effective access to a world of powerful applications, delivered through a browser to any user device (in line with Google’s vision for the future of IT and Enterprise collaboration tools).

But this new integrated environment doesn’t come without significant challenges. Security, to name but one aspect, will become of even more paramount importance: as highlighted by recent data breaches at the Sony Playstation Network and Epsilon Marketing. In another keynote, Kevin Jones, Principle Engineer at the Intel Application Security & Identity Products Group, will explain why complex cloud usage models cannot be addressed effectively with existing Identity Management techniques and will go on to explore the most viable alternatives that are starting to emerge. On the second day of the event, the highly topical issue of mobile and smartphone security in a corporate context will be the subject of a special panel discussion chaired by EEMA, the European association for e-identity and security, and including senior representatives from Ovum, Research in Motion (RIM) and Symantec.

IT Decisions’ free educational programme also includes focused breakout sessions, roundtables and advice clinics from independent experts such as Adisa, BCS The Chartered Institute for IT, Frost & Sullivan, The 451 Group and Verdantix - plus contributions from innovative end-users such as Sainsburys, City University and Sumitomo Trust & Banking Co, covering key themes such as:
